Sports Saturday: NCLB For P.E.?
Buried in this article about changes in the physical education program of Philadelphia-area public schools, I found this little blurb about a proposed federal law that may have big ramifications throughout the country:
Another push comes from a new federal law that will require all districts taking federal money for free or reduced-price lunches to offer some sort of wellness program by September. And a bill in Congress would require that schools meet physical education benchmarks, just as they do for reading and math under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.I believe that the bill is intended to complement the newly enancted federal law that mandates that each district in the country must create a "Wellness Comittee" in order to generate a "wellness policy" for student health and fitness.
