Virginia Middle School Teacher Accused Of Molestation

Another Accusation
Here we have yet another report of a teacher being accused of the molestation of one of her students. Melissa Michelle Deel, aged 32, taught 8th grade ancient world history at Virginia Middle School in Bristol, Virginia.

She is accused of performing a sex act on one of her 13-year-old male students. Two days before Christmas, Deel was arrested and charged with "felony carnal knowledge and taking indecent liberties" with the boy. She has been released on a modest 10,000 bond and has been placed on administrative suspension from her teaching position.

If found guilty, Deel could face up to 20 years behind bars.

The boy and his parents had gone to the police, whose investigation revealed, among other things, that Deel and her alleged victim had been exchanging email messages.

Even though we understand that the accused are to be considered innocent until proven guilty, we here at the 'Wonks continue to be troubled by these repeated allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the education profession.

When a sexual predator shatters the sacred bond of trust between student and teacher, not only is the victim irreparably damaged by the violation of that trust, but our entire profession continues to suffer the loss of the public's trust as well.
