Iraqi School Openings Continue To Be Delayed

School's Still Out For Summer...In Iraq
Your EdWonk has read in yesterday's New York Times that schools in Iraq have yet to open. Opening Day has been postponed multiple times, from September 11th to 18th, then to October 2nd. Now there is discussion about delaying it again, to October 15th.

The reason given is the continuing level of violence directed against children. Another stated reason is that new Saddam-Free textbooks have yet to be delivered, and there are indications that it may be another month before they are.

Some 326,000 Iraqi elementary, middle, and high school teachers have received training in modern teaching techniques, students' rights, and teachers' duties.

We here at The Education Wonks can only imagine how exciting those lectures must have been.
