The Governator Vs. "Boss" Barbara Kerr Of CTA

Governor Schwarzenegger has called for a special election in November. Voters will decide on several proposed new laws, including two that are of especial interest to the education community.

The first would increase the number of years required for teachers to earn tenure. Currently, teachers are tenured after two years in the classroom. If passed, the new statute would mandate that teachers successfully complete five years of service before being given tenure.

The second of Schwarzenegger's initiatives would require that labor unions secure members' permission before spending their dues money for political purposes.

Predictably, President Barbara "Boss" Kerr of The California Teachers Association
isn't happy about the proposed changes.
